An adult can legally change their name by filing a petition with the Court to grant a name change. You must file the required forms; publish the filing of the name change decree and the court date with a local newspaper that is recognized by the court. Publication of your name change does require a court filing fee and a separate fee to advertise in the local newspaper in the County where the petitioner resides. You may also certify your name change and petition with the State of California Department of Vital Records to change your birth certificate.
In the event both parents agree to change a minor child’s name, either parent can petition the Court to do so. If only one parent is listed on the petition to change the minor child’s name, the other parent must be given proper notice of the proposed name change. Publication of the child’s name change does require a court filing fee and a separate fee to advertise in the local newspaper in the County where the petitioner resides. If one parent does not agree to the name change and lives in California, the petition must be personally served. If the parent does not live in California, a copy of the petition must be mailed to the non-custodial parent 30 days prior to the hearing.
If you are served a summons and complaint that you are being sued usually for a debt, you normally have 30 days to respond. You should ALWAYS respond within 30 days even if you agree or disagree with either an “Answer document or a Motion”. You answer must be filed with the Court.
